Delicate Tummy News: New Food Labels and Updated US Dietary Guidelines Scheduled Release by January 2020
Big news for all of us who are big food label readers. I must if you deal with a delicate tummy, food allergies and sensitivities. Thank you to Food Health Communication for this very important information about food labels. According to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the food label has not undergone any big changes since 1994. Updates to the label are based on more recent science, public opinion, and the most recent US Dietary Guidelines, published in 2015. Food labels will be necessary on all US produced food as well as food imported from other countries. The first date for changes was July 26, 2019. However, the FDA granted that companies with $10 million or higher in annual food sales will have until Jan 1, 2020 to be in compliance. Companies with annual sales below $10 million will have an additional year to be in compliance (Jan 1, 2021). 1
One change that consumers will notice is that the serving size and total calories will better reflect what a person would consume in one sitting. For example, a 20 oz. bottle of regular soda would typically be consumed as one serving, not 2 ½ servings as previous labels claimed. A 231-calorie drink may stop a person in their tracks versus a 96-calorie offering in 8 oz. of soda. A serving of ice cream increased from ½ cup to 2/3 of a cup as this is more in line with what a person may eat. The fonts for the serving size and calories is LARGER and in bold print for easier identification. In addition, a list of required ingredients in a food will be modified and must be declared. This is particularly important for those suffering food allergies or intolerance.
Reading food labels is a must in our society today. I hope you will be prepared when the changes takes place.
Delicate Tummy News: Taking a More Healthy Lifestyle Study Shows It Will Reduce Numerous Types of Cancers
Thanks to Food and Health to share this important message. Growing research is helping to explain why following a healthy diet, exercising regularly, and reducing excess body fat and keeping it off will also help reduce the risk of developing numerous types of cancer. It also suggests that adopting a healthy diet and exercise program may slow or stop some cancer cells from proliferating as well. The results provide a plausible physiological mechanism to explain why adopting a healthy diet and exercise program and losing and keeping off excessive body fat stores may even help those with some types of cancer by removing the stimulation for these cancerous cells to grow more rapidly and spread more quickly.

Having food sensitivities and allergies I fear cross contact/cross contamination. It's so important to learn the correct ways to wash your hands. Its a great learning tool for teaching little ones and a refresher course for all adults. Washing hands is so important for good hygiene practice. Washing after going the bathroom, petting the dog or cat, taking out the trash, been with someone sick, before preparing and after preparing meals, etc... Lather up! Your health depends on it. Pass it on!
A big yes…according to Frontiers in Nutrition. By increasing the intake of fiber and including a plant-based diets will increase the growth of beneficial bacteria that will reduce inflammation and cardiovascular disease risk. Fiber also increases short-chain fatty acids linked to improved immunity and improved intestinal function. These conclusions show that a diet contributes to healthful microbiome diversity more than any other factor, and a plant-based diet is the most effective means to ensure optimal gut health.
